Tavern in the Square

Trying the Littleton, Massachusetts Location

This past weekend we had dinner at the Tavern in the Square in Littleton, Massachusetts. Its a bigger place than the location which recently opened in Framingham.

Juliana decided to get the Gluten Free General Tso's Chicken.

Three Things We Learned

The nice thing about going to a place that you know is that the menu is pretty much the same. Juliana was going to order a burger but decided to try something different. She ordered the Gluten Free General Tso's Chicken.

We also got some Fried Pickle Chips and Buffalo Cauliflower as appetizers. Everyone at the table enjoyed them as we were all hungry after a long wait.

We made sure to let the server know that she had a Gluten Free allergy. When the order arrived a manager hand delivered it with a little sign that said Allergy Alert. Her food arrived about a minute before the other entrees.

Great Food!

Juliana enjoyed the General Tso's Chicken, she ate all the Chicken and most of the broccoli. She told me that it was really good and that she would have it again.

Whether you're in the mood for a classic like Vanilla Gelato or something more adventurous like Tigers Blood Italian Ice, Hop-Jo has you covered. And for those who are dairy-free, the Pineapple Dole Whip and Watermelon Sorbet are must-tries.

Hop- Yo- Machines
First you get the ice cream then you go crazy.

Toppings Galore

What's ice cream without toppings? Hop-Jo understands this and provides a plethora of options to sprinkle on top of your chosen treat. From classic chocolate chips and rainbow sprinkles to more unique choices like sour gummy worms and Andes Mint, the possibilities are endless.

Creating Your Perfect Treat

At Hop-Jo, the power is in your hands. You pick the flavors, you pick the toppings--it's as simple as mix, weigh, and pay. This approach not only allows for customization but also ensures that each visitor leaves with a creation that's perfectly tailored to their taste buds.

Four Things We Learned

There are 18 ice cream flavors and 40+ toppings to choose from.

There is a book at the cash register that list all the different allergy information in the ice cream and toppings. We didn't need this as my 13-year old daughter knows what she can have and what she can't have.

There are 21 toppings that are individually stored containers with serving spoons. This helps prevent cross-contamination.

There isn't a lot of seating at the Hop-Jo. If its a nice day, you can always walk down the street and checkout the starting line of the Boston Marathon - there is a nice park across the street.

Eating Gluten-Free at Cabot's

A Delightful Experience for Celiacs

Cabots Ice Cream

Navigating the dining scene for gluten-free options can be a challenge, especially when it comes to finding a place that caters to the needs of those with celiac disease. However, Cabot's in Newton, Massachusetts, stands out as a beacon of hope for gluten-free diners.

A Family-Friendly Haven

Cabot's is not just an old-fashioned ice parlor known for its generous portions of unique premium ice cream and frozen yogurt creations; it's also a full-service family restaurant that serves breakfast all day, along with lunch, dinner, and late-night treats. The ambiance is reminiscent of a bygone era, with authentic soda fountain glasses and a menu that brings diner-style comfort food to the table.

Gluten-Free Delights

For my daughter Juliana, who is celiac, finding a place like Cabot's was a game-changer. Their gluten-free menu options are not only safe but also delicious. (Gluten Free items are listed on the regular menu - they have their own page!) The No Carb Burger Plate was a savory treat without the worry of gluten, and the Build Your Own Chocolate Ice Cream was a sweet ending to an enjoyable meal. It's heartwarming to see her relish her food with the same excitement as everyone else.

Our Verdict

During our visit, we savored the crispy, gluten-free chicken nuggets bathed in the delightful orange-infused sauce. The flavors were spot-on, and the texture was satisfyingly crunchy. The pan-fried pork buns and pork and chive dumplings were equally delightful.

The owner, keen on perfection, was very excited to serve Juliana the General Gau's Chicken. We look forward to returning for a leisurely dim sum experience soon.

The General Gau's Chicken was a hit and Juliana is looking forward to cming back to her new favorite spot.

In Conclusion

Bad Experience at Wendys

Manager Didn't Like Us for No Reason

Wendy Framingham2016
Framingham Wendy's in 2016

This past weekend, we ventured to Wendy's to try the new Orange Dreamsicle Frosty, a popular trend on TikTok. Since it's gluten-free, it was a safe option for my daughter, who (to our surprise!) had never been to Wendy's before. This sparked her curiosity about other gluten-free options on the menu, so we decided to explore those as well.

We had an unusual encounter that we thought we share.

Quick Trip Transcript

My daughter did a quick TikTok of the incident moments after it happened, here's the audio transcript:

Juliana: So we went to the Wendy's right near us. I don't want to say since I come in public and I know I. Have people here. That don't in my school, but someone near us. And I have celiac. I've had it for. It's going to be 10 years next year. Yeah, 10 years this year.
Daddy: Yeah.
Juliana: It's just crazy to think that because I got diagnosed in 2015.
Daddy: 15 Yeah, 2015.

Diagnosed with celiac disease for nine years now, I hadn't been to Wendy's in ages. Unsure if they had gluten-free options, I asked my dad, "Should I check?"

We approached the counter, and I explained my dietary restrictions. The server paused was confused and consulted the manager - who happened to be standing nearby.

"Look at the board," the manager replied.

Confused, I said, "It's okay, but I don't see a board with allergen information." The server didn't offer further guidance, which was frustrating. It would have been helpful if they could have pointed out the menu or explained the options directly.

Daddy: Yep.
Juliana: Especially because I feel. Like they have such a small menu.
Daddy:Yeah. So I ordered my Fries, and you ordered the Orange Dreamsicle Frosty.

The server prepared my drink while my dad's fries were already bagged. The person that took our order made my drink and overfilled it and spill a little and started to clean up the mess on the cup.

The manager walked over to the guy, I could visibly hear this, and said that guy that was working on cleaning the mess - Don't even put your effort into it. They wasted our time. Just made me mad. I could not wait for my drink to get out of there. So we will not be making another trip to the Wendy's.

Daddy: Not that one.
Juliana: We'll definitely be getting this drink 100 times. This is like my new favorite drink, but I would just wish that Wendy... I don't know if it's all Wendy's, if it was just that Wendy's, Wendy's. I hope you see this, I'll tag. I think you need to work on your Customer service a little bit or talk to the manager there because I do not appreciate that.
Daddy: Yes. Especially if they don't know, first of all, from an allergy perspective. If they don't know what what's available for.
Juliana: Right. Like if there's nothing, that's fine. Just say there is nothing. I don't care. Thank you. But I think for. Just. For future assurances, just watch out. I will. I guess I will. I kind of have to say. Where? It is, but it's the one in Framingham in Massachusetts, on Route 9 near the Mass Pike. So just watch out.

Wendy Quote
Don't put much effort into it, they just waisted our time.

At the End of the Day...

Restaurants should do a better job in helping customers with allergies. We were willing to spend more money but instead met with bad service - for no reason.

Certainly not an experience we would expect to have from a manager - First no help on food options and then to tell an employee that "Don't even put your effort into it. They wasted our time." So that my daughter could hear it.

We ended up at SmashBurger in Natick for lunch. We enjoyed our burgers and fries. That part was a good experience.

TIkTok Video

Here's a later version of the video Juliana posted:
