A Trip Back to 1998: Commercial Breaks You’ll Actually Want to Watch

From my personal VHS collection

Today, we’re diving into another gem from my VHS collection - a slice of TV history from November 1998!

Back then, flipping through channels meant stumbling across iconic commercials, catchy jingles, and some weird (but wonderful) ad concepts. I've digitized a set of commercials from a tape recorded during that time, and I've uploaded the full compilation to YouTube for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s what you’ll find in this nostalgic rewind:

Discover Brokerage – "Tow Truck Dreams"

A tow truck driver shares a surprising story with his passenger - he actually owns a country. A clever and whimsical ad about taking control of your financial future.

Snap.com – "Inside the Power Plant"

A behind-the-scenes journey through a metaphorical "search plant," explaining how Snap.com powered internet searches. (Anyone else remember using Snap?)

Burger King – "Have It Your Way: Fries or Rings"

Burger King reminds you that customization is king - now you can choose either crispy fries or onion rings with your Value Meal. Decisions, decisions!

New York Life – "Humanity is the Stone"

A touching ad showing how life insurance is about humanity and security for loved ones. A more emotional tone that stood out from the flashier ads of the time.

Philips TV – "Let’s Make Things Better"

Flat TVs were the future, and Philips was ready to lead the charge. This ad debuted their new flat television technology with a hopeful, futuristic vibe.

10-10-220 – "George Carlin"

Legendary comedian George Carlin stars in a hilarious sketch promoting the budget-friendly long-distance service. Cheap calls and comedy? 1998 was wild.

American Express – "Robert H. Tompkins Story"

Featuring a true story of how an AmEx card saved the day. Real testimonials gave American Express its trustworthy image in the late '90s.

McDonald's Breakfast – "Egg McMuffin Song"

Get ready to have the Egg McMuffin jingle stuck in your head all over again. McDonald’s was really leaning into musical marketing during breakfast hours.

Storm Soft Drink – "New Pepsi Product"

Remember Storm? If not, you’re not alone. Pepsi’s new "stormy" soda never quite took off, but here’s a rare commercial capturing the product launch excitement.

Watch the Full Compilation on YouTube!

I've edited these into one seamless video, complete with original VHS fuzz and tracking lines for that authentic '90s feel.

If you grew up in the '90s, or you're just a fan of retro ads, this will be a great trip down memory lane. Let me know which one brings back the most memories in the comments!
