Fly Lady

From a FlyLady Email (July 7, 2002)

Several times each week someone writes and want to know if my home is perfect. All I can say is that we don't live in a museum. I am not striving for perfection, just peace.

Let me make myself clear. I am one of you; I struggle with all the same problems that you do: My Hot Spots catch fire just like yours. I have peace knowing that if you came to my door, I could let you in without fear. I have no clutter.

In 5 minutes all my hot spots could be extinguished. You could open up all of our closets and you would not be in danger of losing your life from falling objects. I could even take you to our basement and Robert's office. This area used to be our dungeon, but they are getting better each week. Our garage is now a workstation for shipping and Robert's office is Computer Central. The space is functional, even if it is not perfect.

So you see, we live in our home. It is our place of refuge from the outside world. It is our work and our play environment. Our home hugs us and makes us feel comfortable. It welcomes our guests without the stress of having to make it look acceptable to strangers, close friends or family. We do not get in a tizzy if we track in a bit of mulch from our garden paths or if the critters leave footprints on the hardwood floors, because we know it is the work of only a few minutes to clean them up. Since I enjoy seeing my kitchen sink shining you would think that I would go into a mad rage if a glass is left there or if I find a few renegade coffee grounds clouding my reflection. No I don't! It is so simple to just fix it instead of upsetting the tranquility of our home. It doesn't matter in the full scheme of things. What doesn't matter really doesn't matter! Why get all upset when you are talking for a few seconds.

Our home is lived in, not put on display for the world to judge. Even though I would be happy to open my doors to anyone and we have at a moment's notice. In a museum, you can't touch; all you can do is look. Our home is enjoyed by us! Not only is it a pleasure to see because we only have things that bring a smile to our hearts, but we can use everything in our home. When was the last time you opened up your china cabinet and served a meal off of your grandmother's china and good silverware?

My peace comes from being able to find things, live and work in a loving environment, and open my door at any time. I want for you the peace that I have found. It all started with shining my sink and establishing simple routines. You can have this too but is doesn't happen overnight. BabySteps will get you there: One small habit at a time and add to each habit until you are able to put together your own rhythm to FLY by!

Are you ready to FLING open your doors and join me FLYing?
